The Gallerist
On the more refined chic of the spectrum, The Gallerist Phnom Penh is a contemporary art gallery that highlights both Cambodian and international artists. You’ll often come across names like Nout Daro, Chhim Sothy, and others shaping the current scene. From oil paintings to sculpture and mixed-media mediums, you’d be surprised to see their quite vast and well-showcased collection.
What makes the space particularly interesting is its sense of continuity. In Cambodia, there are still relatively few permanent venues dedicated to showcasing contemporary art. More often, exhibitions appear temporarily, through NGO-led auctions, Temporary exhibitions at Java or Pteah Chas, or via pop-up markets such as Psa Art (which I’ll touch on later). Because of that, having a stable gallery like this feels important.
It offers a kind of anchor. No matter what’s happening around the city, you can step in and get a sense of the current pulse of Cambodia’s visual art scene, what’s being explored, what’s emerging, what’s shifting. Something is reassuring in that. A place you can return to, simply to check in on the evolving landscape of art plastique in Cambodia.
